Zen vs Virgin Media

This is the one comparison where the wire into your house is genuinely different: Virgin runs its own cable/fibre network rather than Openreach, which changes speeds, availability and what happens when things go wrong.

The verdict

Virgin wins on raw headline speed-per-pound where its network reaches and Zen's doesn't — and it's the only way to get its top gigabit tiers on cable streets with no full fibre. But Virgin sits at or near the bottom of UK service league tables year after year, writes annual price rises into contracts, and haggling at renewal is practically mandatory. Zen is the opposite trade: pay more, fix the price, and deal with a company that answers the phone. If you value your time, that's not a small difference.

Choose Zen if…

  • You'd rather pay a fair fixed price than haggle every 18 months
  • Customer service actually matters to you — the league-table gap here is enormous
  • Full fibre (Openreach or CityFibre) reaches your address

Choose Virgin Media if…

  • Only Virgin's network serves your street with fast speeds
  • You want big TV bundles and O2 mobile perks on one bill
  • You enjoy renewal negotiations and squeeze the intro deals
