How to switch to Zen — without losing the £40

Switching broadband is easier than it used to be: in most cases Zen handles the whole thing, including telling your old provider. The one thing people get wrong is the order of events with the referral reward. Do it in this sequence.

Row of red-brick terraced houses on a British street

Step 0 — check what you're in for

  • Contract check: if you're still in contract with your current provider, look up your exit fee. Sometimes the maths still works (especially against providers with mid-contract rises), but know the number first.
  • Availability check: run your postcode through zen.co.uk. What Zen can sell you (full fibre vs part-fibre, and the price) depends entirely on your address and which network — Openreach or CityFibre — reaches it.

Step 1 — register through the referral link first

Before you order anything, open the referral link and enter your email address. That registers you with Zen's refer-a-friend scheme (run by Mention Me) so your order can be matched to the £40 eGift card. This is the step that can't be done retroactively — Zen confirms the reward can't be added after you've ordered. One minute now, or no £40 ever.

Step 2 — place your order on zen.co.uk

  • Choose any home or business broadband package with a contract of 12 months or more (all the mainstream packages qualify — see the packages guide).
  • You must be a new Zen customer for the reward to pay out.
  • Pick your activation date at checkout. If you're switching from another provider on the Openreach network, the One Touch Switch process means Zen notifies your old provider — you don't need to call anyone to cancel.
  • Switching across networks (e.g. from a CityFibre provider to Openreach or vice versa) may need you to cancel with your old provider yourself — time it so the old service ends just after the new one starts.

Step 3 — installation and go-live

  • If your home already has the right fibre kit (an ONT), switching can be remote and takes days.
  • First-time full fibre needs an engineer visit to fit the ONT — typically a couple of weeks' lead time.
  • Your router arrives by post pre-configured: plug in on activation day and you're done.

Step 4 — the £40 arrives

Within about 5 working days of your service going live, the eGift card email lands. You choose your retailer (Amazon, M&S, Costa, Just Eat and 100+ others) — do it within 90 days or the link expires, and Zen won't reissue expired vouchers. The person who referred you (on this site, that's me) gets a £40 eGift card too.

Common snags

  • “I forgot the referral link.” If you haven't ordered yet: just do Step 1 now, then order. If you've already ordered: unfortunately the scheme can't apply it retroactively.
  • “My order was cancelled before go-live.” Rewards only pay after the service is live, so a cancelled order means no voucher for either side.
  • “Can I stack it with a discount code?” No — and there are no genuine Zen discount codes anyway. Here's the full story.

Ready to switch? Don't lose the £40.

Zen's reward is a referral link, not a code — it only works if you register through it before you place your order. It takes about a minute: enter your email, then order on zen.co.uk as normal.
